Name: Over the Edge

Description:

Our Ice Sculpture is called "Over the Edge", it's appropriate and ties into the long long 2020 year to end. We went with a snowmobile going off the edge to have a bit of fun with this, as it's featured on the carnival buttons this year. If you look closely at the carvings there a lot of things going on, girls taking selfies wearing masks, and a young man with his dog socially distancing watching the snowmobile racing over the edge of 2020 and into a better 2021. Hail Boreas! and winter fun that Winter Carnival offers for over 135 years.

Team Bio:

Rock & Roll Ice Carvings: Terry Reis- was certified as a "Professional Master Ice Carver", "Competition Ice Carver", and "Certified NICA Judge" in 2003, with the National Ice Carving Association in Chicago. He has competed in the St Paul Winter Carnival for over 25 years and was the Coordinator of the Ice Carving Competition held in Rice Park for 10 years. As well as created ice sculptures for the movies "Jingle All the Way" starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and "Mighty Ducks Two". His talents have been spotlighted on local TV as well as featured in "National Geographic Explorer", "Sports Illustrated", "International Titantic Exhibit", "Good Morning America" and "Minnesota Monthly Magazine" January 2002 issue. Rog Graham- has spent 50 years in the Hospitality Industry , as an Executive Chef and Chef Instructor teaching Culinary Arts. The first time I saw ice sculpture, I was a young line cook. My Chef, Dick Sherman, carved a swordfish for a luau. I was captivated with the whole process. I later attended chef school at Hennepin Tech. I learned to carve ice from Klaus Mitterhauser. In 1990 I went with Tom Doyle to Harbin China to compete against carvers from 10 countries. When I began competing in the St Paul Winter Carnival, working with fellow carvers Larry Fischer and later with Tom Schiller and Terry Reis. I learned from them and still do. I also worked part time carving for Sculpture Ice Company for 20 plus years. We have done well over the past 30 years at carnival. We win some, lose some, doing back-to-back around the clock at 5 below to finish something that's so stunning and so impossible, it kind of takes your breath away. The friendship and camaraderie with fellow carvers are priceless. Everyone helps each other and I keep learning. It is a unique skill I am grateful to have pursued it.
